SNAP Into Action Against Hunger Challenge 2010

March 1st, 2010

Fighting hunger is one of Hands On Hartford’s biggest battles.  Our MANNA program (Meals, Assistance, Neighbors, Nurturing, Advocacy) is a comprehensive basic needs program. It provides nutrition for homeless individuals, emergency food, fuel and assistance for families, and weekend meals for seniors.  Every year we provide 35,000 meals to over 1,500 homeless and low income adults at our Community Meals soup kitchen in addition to 1,300 on holidays alone.  We also deliver over 12,000 meals to homebound elderly people and provide 18,000 lunches and cold pack dinners to seniors on the weekends.  Our food pantry gives over 100,000 lbs. of groceries to 250+ households.

While we face this battle head on every day as an agency, we also hope to help raise awareness of the struggles that our clients and many others face on a day-to-day basis.  Our SNAP Into Action Against Hunger program, in conjunction with Foodshare and the Charter Oak Cultural Center, is designed to bring attention to the plight of the hungry in our own neighborhoods and communities.

Participants in the program are challenged to live off of only $3.00 a day per person – the average daily allowance of a family on the SNAP program (formerly known as food stamps).  If you think you can take on the challenge for a month, a week, or even just a day, consider taking part in the program and challenging your friends and family to do the same.  You will be amazed at how creative and resourceful you can be, and it will give you a new understanding of the hunger that many people face and the work we all must achieve to defeat hunger once and for all.

This year we will also feature a SNAPShots of Hunger Photo Contest, to encourage participants to document their service in the community or the struggle they face during the Challenge by taking a photo and describing (in 250 words or less) what it means to them and their community.  The winner of the contest will be awarded a prize at the wrap-up event on Monday, March 29th.

You can take on the Challenge as a spiritual cleansing during the month of March leading up to the holy days of Passover and Easter, or just as a way to enlighten yourself and others about the plight of the poor and hungry.  Signing up for the SNAP Challenge is a great way to learn what life is like for people on the nutritional assistance program and to teach your friends and family as well.

After taking on the Challenge for a week or a month, join us to reflect on the experience at our wrap up gather on Monday, March 29th 6:30pm (also at Charter Oak).  Charter Oak Cultural Center is located at 21 Charter Oak Avenue. Hartford.  Sign up to attend either of these events by calling (860) 249-1207.
